Sustainability and Environment

The Blackwater Project is an exploration/development project located in central British Columbia.

Our People

As an advanced exploration project in a remote location, we focus on the safety of our people. Since the implementation of New Gold’s health and safety systems and training, safety records have been excellent. We have an emergency helicopter landing area and all site personnel are trained in a site-specific Emergency Response Plan. All employees and contractors participate in a health & safety and environmental induction program.

Our Community

New Gold strives to be a full partner in the community and the region by actively supporting community-building and economic diversification activities.

Since 2012, the Blackwater Project Community Liaison Committee has met regularly to discuss issues of importance to the region. Members have discussed operational shift scheduling, community health, post-secondary education and skilled labour attraction and retention.

New Gold and Community Liaison Committee members will continue working together to maximize benefits and opportunities to the local region.

In addition to regular meetings with community leaders and project stakeholders, since 2012 New Gold has hosted:

  • Open Houses
  • Focus groups
  • Community Leaders meetings
  • Community Liaison Committee Meetings
  • Citizen forums in four communities
  • Economic development workshops
  • Site tours and
  • a Regional Health forum

The Blackwater Project produces newsletters each year and regularly attends trade shows, business forums, conferences, resource and economic summits and industry specific events. Regular project presentations are given to elected officials, chambers of commerce, business, education/ training institutes and community and environmental groups.

The Blackwater Project's annual exploration program normally begins in late May, weather permitting. Staff at the Blackwater Project Office, located in Vanderhoof, are available to provide current information about the project, to discuss local employment and contracting opportunities and to answer any questions community members have.

To support local communities and share the benefits of our activities, New Gold has developed a community donation program and is working with training institutions such as the College of New Caledonia and local school districts to create training programs that are tailored to aboriginal people and future mine workers.

Our Environment

The water that is used for exploratory drilling comes primarily from the wells that are drilled as part of the exploration program. In each of the drilling rigs, drilling water is recycled.

We maintain recycling stations for paper, plastics, batteries and other commercially recyclable items, and endeavour to reduce consumables and recycle where possible.

We have taken significant steps to ensure high environmental standards and best practices related to biodiversity management. The Blackwater site is located adjacent to a Provincial Ungulate Winter Range (UWR) protected by Provincial Order. As a result, we modified our proposed mine design to protect this area and established a Northern Caribou Management Plan, whose objective is to minimize the impacts of mineral exploration and predator and human access to Northern Caribou habitat.

The project is also adjacent to a potentially rare species, Whitebark Pine. As a result we have developed a Whitebark Pine Management Plan to protect this species. The plan includes the identification, flagging and collection of cones for propagation to help re-establish this vulnerable species. The seedlings will be used in the reclamation plan for the proposed mine.
