Cerro San Pedro receives 2015 CanCham Outstanding Business Award
This recognition highlights Cerro San Pedro’s effective engagement, caring for sustainable development, well being of its workers and families and its constructive presence in each of the 13 communities surrounding the mine.
At Cerro San Pedro, we strive to achieve a zero-accident workplace through a strict Health and Safety program that applies to all operational staff, both contractors and employees. As a result of our commitment to accident prevention, our mine is one of the safest in Mexico.
We maintain a close relationship with the residents of the Municipality of Cerro de San Pedro, which comprises thirteen communities and three ejidos (communally-owned land holdings) within the project’s sphere of influence. We provide the communities with access to medical and dental services and support the local educational system with contributions of computer equipment, educational software and Internet connectivity to classrooms. We provide transportation to and from children’s homes to their schools. We also contribute to the preservation of local heritage and culture, and have provided financial support for the restoration of the church of San Nicholas and the altar dedicated to the Virgen de Guadalupe, and construction of a new rectory for the church.
Our contributions have been recognized in our accreditation as a Socially Responsible Company (Empresa Socialmente Reponsable - ESR) by the internationally-recognized non-profit Mexican Centre for Philanthropy (Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía - CEMEFI).
Cerro San Pedro has been awarded with the prestigious “Level 3 Safe Company” by the Ministry for Labor. The award honors those working places
which have implemented a labor system of safety and health management, thus
promoting the voluntary compliance of regulations in the referred fields, a
constant improvement in the prevention of accidents and illness and the
decrease of accidents and occupational illness. This award will be granted
for a 3-year period, subject to revalidation and has been granted to only 8
mining companies in Mexico. Cerro San Pedro has also earned ISO 9001:2008
Certification in Minerals for metallurgical benefit processes recognizes
that control standards are in place upon internal benchmarks, and ISO14001:2004 certification in recognition that the Cerro San Pedro mine is in
good standing and operates in compliance with all laws, regulations and an
environmental management system internationally certified.
At Cerro San Pedro, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. Our environmental management system has achieved ISO 14001:2004 status. In this semi-arid region, we have made significant investments in improving our mineral recovery processes to reduce our water consumption. Domestic wastewater is treated and re-used and rainwater is collected and used in processing. Water flows through a closed circuit with no discharges of wastewater. The only water loss is due to the leach pile retention and the high levels of evaporation in this region.
Our Integrated Management System specifies procedures for responsible waste management, applying Mexican classification standards for hazardous, special handling and solid waste and sanitary waste water.
We integrate reclamation into every phase of mining, and maintain a botanical nursery that has produced over 135,000 plants of various indigenous species for ongoing reclamation work. Our annual reforestation goal is 44 hectares, and in the next few years we plan to reforest more than 360 hectares of land outside the mine site.
As a gold producer we are always alert to the hazards of cyanide and the need for continual vigilance in its storage, management and use. Our audit towards certification under the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) has been completed and we working towards certification by 2013.
